Genesis 1:1 – God Created

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

God, being Creator, is the foundation of absolutely everything, which is why God chose to open his story with this verse. Every human, past or present, has contemplated fundamental questions about how they came to be, how the Earth came to be, why they think and feel, and what their place is in the universe. The proper place to begin answering these questions is, “In the beginning God created…” When we dwell on this verse, God reveals to us layer upon layer of His miraculous creation, and in these revelations, He draws us nearer to Him.

This verse is the first time that God requires our faith. He could have chosen to explain His eternal existence, before the “beginning,” in a way we understand. He could have made each of us with an innate understanding of Him that would leave us without a single question, but God does not tell His story that way. From the “beginning,” He requires our faith. Because of this, people throughout time have been trying to understand our origin without God as Creator. Generations of the most intelligent secularists have made this effort. The best they can come up with is that all of life spontaneously developed out of nothingness, evolving from a single cell organism into our vast diversity of plant and animal life, which includes human beings.

When we sit alone with our thoughts, marvel at the vast or the minute, or have eyes that see God’s hand everywhere, we know that God created. And if God is gracious enough to reveal Himself to us through his creation, that means His first words to us in the Bible are true. And if we know that God Himself created our universe and everything in it, we should seek to understand Him and know Him. Fortunately, if we choose to seek Him, we will come to find that the God who made us with His infinite power, also loves us. And if we know God loves us, we should rejoice and obey.

Prayer

Lord, we thank you for your wondrous creation. Help us to see You everywhere we look.
