“He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.” John 2:25
Jesus knows each and every one of us—inside and out. This verse is not a general statement about Jesus’s understanding of the common tendencies of humanity, but a profound glimpse into His intimate knowledge of who we are at our core. When we think of an all-knowing and all-powerful God in Heaven, we must connect these attributes to Jesus, who is Himself God, who decided to take human form to redeem His creation.
Jesus’s knowledge of us is complete and multifaceted. He created us. “He (Jesus) was with God in the beginning. Through him (Jesus) all things were made,” (John 1:2-3). Like the painter knows every stroke of the brush that formed their painting, like the chef knows the ingredients used to cook their meal, Christ knows us intimately as our Creator. He is with us always, there is no way to escape accountability and there is no way to escape His love. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him whom we must give an account,” (Heb. 4:13). “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present not the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Rom. 8:38-39). Christ knows every detail about us, that’s why we can know that there is nothing that will separate us from His love. When He says He loves us, He does so in the full knowledge of who we are. This knowledge of us is portrayed beautifully in Psalm 139:
“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there… For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well…Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:1-8,13-14,16-17).
He knows us completely. He loves us unconditionally. He has given us His word to teach us and His Spirit to guide us. He has come to save us and wants to spend eternity in Heaven with us. He offers to lead us to the green pastures of His grace. Considering all this, why do we hide from Him? Why are we slow to repent? Why are we slow to be honest with Him about the depth of our need for Him?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for weaving us into Your divine plan. Thank you for loving us so unconditionally. Help us to lay our burdens before You and accept Your grace and redemption, knowing that You know us better than we know ourselves and there is nothing that will separate us from Your love if we choose to say yes to You.
